Nan Luma really values fun, freedom, and connection. She believes that everyone does better with someone in their corner. Nan created iLUMAnate Coaching in 2014 to help people see their stuff and allow them to break free! LIBERATION! There is so much renewed energy mentally and physically that comes from being liberated. Luma helps her community to see this as an attainable goal that you don’t have to do alone.

Nan briefly shares her take on mental wellness and how she deals with hurdles in her day-to-day life.

Recess: Has fitness always been an important part of your life? If not, why is it important now more than ever?

Nan Luma (NL): It’s always been a part of my life as I was fortunate enough to have been raised by a family in medicine and public health.

Recess: What does your week-to-week workout routine look like?

NL: 3-4 strength training workouts and 3 cardio workouts with lots of healing restful moments in between.

Recess: If someone was just starting on their fitness journey (and needed a pick-me-up!), what would you say?

NL: If you wait for the perfect conditions, you’ll never get anything done. Life is happening here and now, not later.

Recess: What do you do when you’re feeling burnout coming on?

NL: Cease all things on my to-do list. And create a NOT to-do list.

Recess: Why is destigmatizing mental health personally important to you?

NL: There’s nothing to destigmatize, really, as this is just a part of life. Everyone’s got a brain and a nervous system and just like anything else, some have more reps in curating a flexible nervous system than others. Similarly, all humans are met with traumas in life, no one gets out of here unscathed.  Talking about mental health should be just as common as discussing your physical health.
